Accelerated Reader Kickoff!!

Wednesday, October 24 was a day of great fun and  literacy building activities for the 9th, 10th and 11th grade students who participated in Edison's AR Kickoff. There were three stations-- Hangman, Scrabble, and Boggle-- manned by the enthusiastic City Year corps members that were extremely engaging and showed how exciting words can be. Mr. Valdes and Ms. Theodoris led the SmartBoard Base/Affix word creation games, and the teachers did read alouds with their kids.

This beautiful sign, created by Ms. Money,  greeted the children as they entered the kickoff.

Creating a College Going Culture

The feeling of a successful future is pervasive at Edison Senior High School! While College Summit is in full force with peer leaders at the helm (with the guidance of Mr. Rosas) and the ACT/SAT teachers are cultivating test-taking awareness, other teachers throughout the school are doing their part to enstill a sense of "the best is yet to be" for all of our students, regardless of grade or academic level.

In Ms. Davis' classroom, she has posted a tangible reminder of that which is an abstract concept for many young people--- college graduation. Ms. Davis has her own graduation gown, with sorority representation, on the wall directly above her desk.

This feeling of college readiness is also evident through the big goal posted in Mr. Bernal's class. In posting this, he is reminding his students each day the purpose behind all of their lessons and hard work-- Being COLLEGE READY!
To expose students to the different colleges that they can potentially attend, Ms. Edwards has created signs that show where each of the faculty went to school and a statement of the best part of college for them.

In Mr. Mendez's Freshman Foundations class, he is getting the youngest students in the mindset of starting now to plan for college. Across his back wall, many top notch colleges are posted in color and he references them regularly to build excitement and awareness.

In each hallway in the building, a sign is posted above the entrance with a reference to a Florida college, bringing even more attention to the possibilites of college after high school.

Print Rich Environments

Many teachers are getting the year started with colorful, stimulating and thought provoking classroom environments. The walls are covered with posters that support learning. Messages about life, reading, thinking, and futures are pervasive in these classes. Quotes from famous people are up and inspiring students to reach their full potential.

Ms. Garcia-Rios has set her re-takers up for success by creating an environment that leads to thinking and comprehending.

Helping students to think like good readers do in an 11th grade intensive reading class:

Ms. Garcia-Rios is Getting Students Excited about Reading Through An Artistic Exhibit:

Mr. Bernal has done a nice job of creating an environment that is inspirational and encourages hard work.

Mr. Bernal is helping his students focus on the outcome of their hard work by posting the days left until the assessments.
Ms. Davis has posted quotes like one below throughout her class, giving her students motivational words to ponder as they look around.

In her Intensive Reading classroom, Ms. Cole has created a bold and inviting sanctuary for her students to enjoy one of the many books she has put on display. On the wall behind the shelf, are the different genres available in her library.

By posting the active reading strategies of a good reader in a visible location, Ms. Cole is constantly keeping her students focused on the steps to take to comprehend the text they encounter.
Although there are not any words up yet, Ms. Cole has her wall ready for the "retired" vocabulary words to be posted for reference once they are no longer an active part unit to be used during classroom discussions and as the students write.
